Who also is Ivan the Terrible?

The Russian Tsar IV, known as 'Ivan the Terrible' in history. Ivan is a historical character that many people are curious about. So what was it that made Ivan the Terrible awful?

The first Russian statesman to receive the title of Tsar

Ivan the Terrible is the first Russian statesman to receive the title of tsar. His activities during his reign and, indeed, his application of his acceptance in the world of mind made him the founder of the Russian Empire and made him one of the greatest conquerors of Russian history.

Ivan the Terrible

This period is very important for Ivan, who grew up as an orphan at the age of 3 with the death of his father Vasili and at the age of 8 with the death of his mother Elena. Because, after the death of his father, his lover's murder by the boyars as a result of his attempt to remove all rivals under his mother's power and the attitudes towards them after that, deeply affected him.

These events in his childhood were decisive in Ivan's irresistible violent attitude. So much so that he enjoyed playing games that shed blood in his childhood. Ivan, who developed himself under the influence and direction of the metropolitan Makari, was very interested in reading books and he was interested in historical and religious books.

He made massacres

Ivan, who preferred to share his power at first, then began to put pressure on his people, saying that his power was given to him by God. He established a fear regime that would reinforce his leadership by massacring. Historians call this period the period of terror.

Ascended to the throne at the age of 17 in 1547 with his own will and consciousness, Ivan's basic policy in his early years was to fight the nobles at home and the Tatars outside.

In 1556, it spread over the Turkish lands with the Kazan campaign, triumphed against the Tatars and started the occupation, and then occupied Astarhan in 1558. Ivan was also a good war propagandist and writer. Brochures he prepared for this purpose have an important place in Russian literature.

After the death of his first wife in 1560, the Tsar began to lose his mental balance. With the death of his wife, whom he loved dearly and whom he had kept from immoral acts, he again inclined towards extreme situations such as misogyny and alcoholism and violence.

He killed nearly 60 thousand people

He believed that he was surrounded by enemies. For this reason, he killed thousands of nobles and confiscated their land. He started the Novgorad Massacre in 1570. It is estimated that around 60 thousand people were killed during this period. One of the scariest events is that he killed his own son. Ivan, who was called a paranoid, killed his son, who he thought betrayed him, by hitting him in his chin with an iron rod in a moment of anger.
